When I think of Victor Hugo, I always think of his poem "Boaz Asleep." I can't offhand remember which translation I like best- it may be the one in the Brooks Haxton collection. Horrible atheist that I am, I go back to read it over and over. Its worth bearing in mind, I guess, that in this time of the over-politicization of everything, we increasingly risk disregarding beautiful works of sublime veneration or deep thought or exquisite science because they don't fit a given agenda or stubbornly narrow perception.
